Surrey Street Cafe is a no-frills, traditional cafe tucked just off the hustle of Surrey Market in Croydon. Its location behind market stalls gives it a tucked-away feel, making it a spot locals often stumble upon while wandering nearby. The atmosphere is straightforward and unpretentious, filled with the kind of familiarity you’d expect from a long-standing neighborhood caff rather than a polished coffee bar.

This cafe is best known for its hearty, classic British breakfasts and comforting homemade-style dishes. Locals tend to drop in when they’re after a filling start to the day or a satisfying midday meal, with offerings like an English Breakfast and shepherd’s pie highlighted on the menu. Meals arrive generous and straightforward, often reminding people of home cooking rather than anything fancy. The informal setting — walls lined with an old-school menu full of affordable choices — is where the charm is found, along with a service style that feels personal without being intrusive.

Surrey Street Cafe tends to attract a mixed crowd: people grabbing a meal while running errands around the market, those waiting for car repairs nearby, or just longtime Croydon residents who appreciate friendly faces and no fuss food. The cafe’s friendly staff, including the recognizable bald owner who greets guests with a good-natured approach, contribute to a down-to-earth vibe. It is not pristine or sleek, but it’s cozy enough to settle into if you want to escape the busy street outside.

The best time to visit is during weekday mornings or early afternoons when the cafe isn’t rushed but still buzzes with a steady flow of regulars and market visitors. If you’re after a quick yet substantial meal — whether that’s a full cooked breakfast or a comforting pie — this is the kind of place where you can enjoy simple food that fills you up and warms you through, away from the trendier cafes scattered around Croydon.

Hiding behind a market booth. We followed our nose. The owner was standing outside and greeted us. Went in and found his amazing menu. Ordered the shepherds pie. Was like a meal at home. Will definitely go back.

We wondered around Croydon while my car was in service and yes it took ages. Hunger found us at this old school cafe served by a charming big guy with bald head he was funny. Anyway I ordered the omelette breakfast and greedy me added a chicken and mushroom pie the gut busting breakfast was delicious huge and well worth the money if you find yourself in Croydon go check them out. They are in the fruit market area.

Went here twice because I really enjoyed the food. I am always trying different places for English Breakfast to see how they are. As well as Breakfast, they have burgers, Pukka Pies and other homemade dishes. The staff here are wonderful and friendly. On the first visit, just had a sausage and egg. When it came, it was egg and bacon, although it was not what I ordered, the bacon was trimmed and looked good. But anyway, the sausage and egg I had was perfect so came back again for more because I found out that they use my favourite St Nicholas Baked Beans which are more savoury in taste. A few days later, I was back for the breakfast. As you can imagine, it was very hard to make up my mind so had the Set 1 Breakfasts which includes beans, sausage, egg, bacon and 2 slices of toast with tea. The buttered toast was so good because it was buttered with real butter and having two slices was very satisfying. In a way I regretted not getting the bigger breakfast which comes with bubble. Anyway, top marks for it all.

While strolling the surrey market i complained that i was hungry. A big bald man who was smoking on the street beside me then pointed to his restaurant hidden behind a market booth. We followed him in and we sat down. The wall was plastered with so many affordable choices! While not the cleanest looking of restaurants the place was decent enough. However, when the food arrived it was piping hot and served in large portions. My wife had the sheppards pie, i had bangers and mash, and our son enjoyed an american style burger. Shepards pie eas homemade that morning. My bangerd and mash came with perfectly sauted grilled onions with tasty gravy. The american style burger was spiced and grilled just right. The fries it came with were cooked superbly. They were golden brown, crisp, and not too greasy. Overall, the place is well worth more than one visit. The cheap menu with large tasty servings should keep most people coming back! I definitely recommend because we were sooo sick of corporate food that to find this little hole in the wall made our last day in the uk complete with a belly full of home cooked goodness. Thanks.

The best kept secret in Croydon! I love this place, the food is fantastic, the service is wonderful. It's a decent caff that does an affordable and delicious breakfast! Long live the greasy spoon!
